Research Objectives
In this assignment, we are looking to see if there would be an opportunity for Lyft, a ride share service, to start operating in India.
Research question: Is there a business opportunity for Lyft to operate and in India and which city would be the most profitable?
There are many reasons why we chose India as a Country to operate in and the first one is for its large population of 1,392,864,531 people (Worldometer, 2021). We saw a potential in India because it is the second biggest country in population that Uber, a competitor, operates in. We believe that what applies to Uber will also apply to Lyft in terms of operations. In 2018, Uber provided 11 million rides per week in the country and increased to 14 million in 2019 (Singh,2020). That being said, we know that there definitely is a potential market for Lyft to enter. The company is known to be slightly cheaper than Uber, and hence why we think that Lyft would succeed in India.
Research Brief
Organizational Background Info
Lyft is a major player in the ridesharing marketplace. Founded in 2012 under the name Zimride, the young company started as a new competitor and began only offering the foundation of the current rideshare platform. They have come a long way to securing around 30% of the market in the United States. While not as large and as widespread internationally as Uber, it operates in 2 countries: Canada and the United States. They grew to operate in over 600 cities within these 2 countries. Its main focus is on facilitating and developing a platform that connects drivers and people needing a ride. In addition to connecting drivers and riders, it also offers more niche services such as rentals for bikes and scooters and even vehicles. With this individual-centric model running almost identical to Uber’s, Lyft also offers business class options such as ride credit programs, public transit supplementation, and creating custom transportation programs. All of these services are delivered through their proprietary mobile application. In terms of its drivers, they sign into an app on their phone that collects and records their earnings and rider details. They are classified as independent contractors which the company uses in order to decrease overall liability and to keep employee costs low. This has been a source of controversy over the years for both major rideshare companies, but as of 2019 over 52% of Lyft drivers reported being satisfied with working for Lyft.
Business Problem/opportunity background
The current issue for Lyft is finding ways to fight against the dominance of Uber since they are so deeply entrenched as the main rideshare company in North America. While minor incremental gains have been made in securing more market share, these are mainly due to issues with Uber falling from 74% to 68% from 2017 to 2021. The company has made strides in addressing the less common customers, such as ridesharing credit programs and supplementing public transit options Unfortunately, it likely won’t be enough to dethrone the current market leader. Our idea is to do as Uber has done and focus on expanding operations outside of North America. We must conduct analyses on the places that Uber has tried to enter and failed because then we can identify gaps or other reasons for investment. Analyzing competitors’ mistakes can be a great advantage for new companies and help them succeed where others failed. An ideal location to begin this international expansion would be India. Due to its large population size and the viability of its motorway network, we believe Lyft can leverage its overall vehicle flexibility to accommodate the diverse transportation options in the country. Secondarily, there is friction between the domestic taxi companies and ridesharing; this provides an opportunity for a rideshare company to come in and bridge that divide. From rickshaws to SUVs to scooters, Lyft already has most of the infrastructure needed to gain a solid hold of their rideshare market.

With Lyft’s annual revenue of 2.3 billion in 2020, we assumed that the maximum allocated budget should be 230,000,000$. We will need to conduct a Product Detail Market Report and the costs are around USD 15,000$ – USD 30,000$. We could potentially need to conduct surveys which could cost around another USD 20,000$. As of now we can evaluate research costs at USD 50,000$.

This article is about what Uber has put in place to operate in India and its. We believe that comparing the market with competitors can be helpful to determine what to do and what could be changed. The first thing that caught our attention is the fact that Uber is willing to offer multiple ride services to adapt to the population’s needs. This includes cars, bikes, autos, or public transports. Uber stives to better the Indian mobility market by offering easily available options. The article expands on how they rely on technology to make everything happen.
An assumption would be that what Uber is delivering in India is successful. We could research furthermore to get financial statements that would confirm or refute the information. An interesting information is that the article states that the infrastructure system in India is still under development. This is an important information that needs to be considered when developing the different options that Lyft could offer to meet the needs.
https://news.crunchbase.com/news/understanding-why-lyft-loses-money/
This article is important because it talks about the high costs of Lyft’s operations. It explains that its operating costs are high than the gross profit. Lyft lost 911.3 million $ in 2018 due to that reason. There is also some pertinent information when it comes to attracting both riders and drivers. The article stated that Lyft offer promotions to riders to increase their number of customers, and that they offer bonuses to drivers to ensure they have enough workers to cover the demand. That being said, these methods affect the company’s revenue, as it creates more expenses. As a matter of fact, Lyft invested around 800 million dollars in 2018 in sales and marketing.
The assumption made here is that Lyft might not have enough capital to invest in an international market. On the other hand, we don’t know the profit per city and demographics and therefore would be hard to compare at this time.

This article analyses Lyft’s current financial situation, after submitting their first quarter report for the 2021 year. It stated that it is hard to evaluate and compare profit and loss due to the ongoing Corona Virus pandemic. However, Lyft’s profit has increased by 7% since the fourth quarter, in 2020. Unfortunately, the company reported a net loss of 427.3 million dollars for the first quarter of 2021.
This information will be important when it comes to budgeting and cost calculations. It is important to take all that information into consideration before investing an enormous sum of money towards a new market.

https://cleantechnica.com/2020/12/06/india-imposes-new-regs-for-ride-sharing-companies-cuts-commissions/
This article elaborates on the new regulations implemented in India for ride-sharing companies. Overall, the regulations are not there to prevent competitors to enter the market. They are in place to either satisfy customers or regulate the drivers’ work hours. Unfortunately, the ride-sharing companies are only allowed to get 20% commission on rides as supposed to the usual 26% that Uber receives. If Lyft decides to operate in India, they will also have to follow the new environmental regulations, such as not permitting the use of Diesel fueled cars. This article would be useful when it comes to knowing the procedures to follow in the mobility market. On the other hand, it would not be enough and would need further research to get information on all guidelines to follow.
