Writing Assignment Help Define human diversity (cultural diversity). (2 sentence minimum response)

Cultural Diversity is defined by addressing the variety of human societies and cultures, examining their similarities and differences. This is highlighting what makes individuals, groups, and cultures unique.

Differentiate between ethnocentrism and racism. (3 sentence minimum response)

Ethnocentrism is the belief that your own culture is the norm which all others should be measured. Racism is similar in the belief of superiority; however, it also includes prejudice and discrimination. They are both detrimental to the individual, family system, community, and society at large. Racism can be systemic.

Considering information in the Diversity Wheel, describe a situation in which you or one or more of your group members have been part of an internal dimension that was different from another group or population. (3 sentence minimum response)

Age: being younger in the population you get looked down on like you do not know a lot of information as the older population. Younger population speaks more English then their first language (parent).

Race/ Ethnicity: Witness of racial separation caused by language barriers

In healthcare, you will be working with patients with various human diversity characteristics (internal dimensions). Relate the diversity topic below to working with patients: (10 – 14 sentence response – total for the entire question)

Age: if the patients is adult, you talk more detail about the procedure. But if the patients are child, you need more patience could require.

Race/ethnicity: Try to understand the background of the patient to provide the quality of care that is needed. Treat the patient as your own family member

National origin: Understanding that in different cultures the family may be required to care for the patient when they are ill, so letting the family know that you are available if they need to care for the patient. As the caregiver, make the patient feel comfortable as possible

Gender: women prefer another woman to take care of them, so if a male is the caretaker make sure and ask if it is ok to take to patient to the restroom or help bathe the patient if the patient is unable to do for self. Make sure to keep the private areas covered as much as possible when giving care regardless of the gender.

Gender identity and expression: Treat them with the equal care as any other patient with respect of their gender identity.

Sexual orientation: To provide the adequate care regardless of the sexual orientation must maintain a professional attitude

Mental/physical ability: if a patient has a mental disability, it requires the caregiver to have more patience and give appropriate commands that you need them to do and to understand what is needed of them.

Differentiate between assimilation and biculturalism. (3 sentence minimum response)

Assimilation is a process where majority culture or group is changed with the minority culture eventually making them the same. Biculturalism however is recognizing the individualism between two cultures coming together. It refers to both elements of two groups but still being oneself. These two terms are somewhat similar but demonstrate their own view on how cultures come together to form our culture and community environment.

Why is it important, particularly in the health care environment, to learn to work with people (coworkers and patients) who may be culturally different from us? In other words, why should we embrace diversity? (3 sentence minimum response)

working in the healthcare environment is it important to demonstrate understanding of those who are culturally different because you want to create a relationship with your patients to the point where they feel safe, and they feel as if they are receiving excellent care. By doing this you must understand and look beyond people’s differences to still provide the best care. To embrace diversity, it will allow you to create connections with new people and build up your experience working with different types of people. It as a major opportunity for growth for the individual and the workplace when diversity is embraced. Different backgrounds should never interfere with healthcare. They should be celebrated and respected. The healthcare field is for CARING for people and helping them. It is not about personal beliefs or preferences; it’s about helping people.

Define the term “cultural competency.” (2 sentence minimum response)

Cultural competency is the ability to strongly interact and communicate to those with different cultural backgrounds. In order to achieve this, one must understand their own cultural differences from those they are around and build a strong understanding of the people around them. This creates a positive outlook on the world and the people in it, benefiting them by learning about new cultures.

Provide an example of how you could use empathy to influence health care delivery with a patient who is culturally different from you and your group members. (3 sentence minimum response)

One example that comes to mind is if I am working with a muslim woman who is wearing a hijab. Suppose she is in for a treatment that requires her to take off her hijab. I know that this is a very sensitive scenario! I would calmly speak to her about the necessary procedure. I would ask her if there is anything that I could do to help her feel more comfortable removing this important religions garment. I also know that being treated by a woman in this scenario would be much more appropriate as they usually have strict rules about exposing their hair in front of men. I would make sure that there are no men that would potentially see her hair.

Discuss the differences in working in the field of radiography with pediatric and geriatric patients. (3 sentence minimum response)

Pediatric patients are dealt with more hands on to limit their movement and keep them distracted from the scanning, also talking to them during the entire procedure explaining what you are doing to keep the calm. Geriatric patients explaining what kind of procedure they are having and in more detail of how you need them to position. You also may need to speak louder and clearer depending on if they are hard of hearing, so they understand what you are doing.

Read the imaging scenario provided below and then respond to the discussion questions.
A biker arrives at the emergency room around midnight, severely injured in a collision with a car. He is dressed in leathers, and his arms are covered with tattoos. He is unshaven and badly in need of a bath. He is accompanied by his biker buddies—a scary-looking lot. The computed tomography (CT) imaging specialist is called in to obtain a head CT scan. Not only is she fearful of the bikers, but she is irritated that yet another biker has interrupted her night. She is certain he most likely deserves what he received, and she hopes he had signed a donor card. Her interaction with the biker and his buddies displays her fear and irritation. It is a less than successful patient care situation. She is called into her manager’s office after a very negative customer service survey arrives. She is questioned about her feeble attempt to provide a high-quality exam for the biker. At a later date the biker returns to the hospital for a follow-up CT scan. When he introduces himself, the CT technologist is shocked to barely recognize the gentleman in the business suit—who just happens to be one of the hospital’s attorneys. He tells her that his passion and diversion from his world of business are to ride his “hog” with his group of weekend biker buddies, who, like him, wear suits during the week and leathers on the weekends. The CT technologist is embarrassed and doesn’t know what to say.

Discussion questions:

What should the CT technologist have done differently?
Why did she act as she did?
Should it have made a difference if the CT technologist had known who the “biker” really was?

I feel like the CT technologist should have handled the situation differently by staying calm and just thinking positive about the situation. She should have remembered her oath as a medical professional to treat whomever comes in with respect regardless of their economic status, race, ethnicity, gender, orientation or appearance. I feel like she should be willing to help anyone that walks into the hospital requiring treatment, without bias, and not to judge anyone by their outer appearance.

I feel like she was acting this way because she was judging him on his appearance and discriminating against him based on his clothing. She acted like she did not want to help him because he looked dirty.

I feel like if the CT technologist had known who the biker really was, she would have handled the situation differently because he is an attorney who works for the hospital. It should have not made a difference as every patient deserves quality care. [supanova_question]
