Discussion Forum #9 Topic
To complete Discussion Forum #9 please answer respond to the question prompts below:

Microfinance is often touted as a potential solution to help countries develop.  In the first paragraph, provide a definition of microfinance.  Then, please describe what are the potential benefits of microfinance.  Also describe what are the potential drawbacks of microfinance.

Then in the second paragraph, please visit Kiva’s website.  Kiva is a NGO that crowdfunds loans and unlocking capital for the underserved, improving the quality and cost of financial services, and addressing the underlying barriers to financial access around the world. Through Kiva’s work, lenders can pay for tuition, women can start businesses, farmers are able to invest in equipment and families can afford needed emergency care.

Please go to https://www.kiva.org/about to learn more about Kiva and what they do.  Then click on https://www.kiva.org/categories, choose a category, and then choose a project.  For example, you can click on Women, and then search for a project that you would like to sponsor.  In your second paragraph explain why you picked the project.  What interested you about the project?  Do you think the project will be impactful?  If so, how?  Look at the loan details, the field partners and repayment schedule when making your comments.

When responding to your fellow student’s post, make sure you are providing feedback in your comments.  For example, you can follow up on their choice of project. The goal is to have a good conversation about microfinance and how it could potentially help those in need.

Replies must be substantive and specific.  Saying “good job” or “I agree”, is not enough.  Students must put some thought into their Replies.

NOTE: You will not see the posts of your peers until you post your response to my prompt. You must wait 15 minutes and then refresh the page (or click on the prompt) before you will see the responses.
