Sexually Transmitted Diseases (Stds) Among College Students

1. Burden of College Students’ STI in the U.S

a. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2016), STDs are common among people aged 15 -24 years. Therefore, STDs affect adolescents and youths in colleges in the U.S (CDC, 2016). The data also shows that more than half of the new STD infections yearly affect college youth and adolescents (CDC, 2016). For instance, the CDC (2016) indicates that more than 10 million young Americans contract STDs yearly.

b. Caccamo, Habel, Beltran, Becasen, Pearson & Dittus (2016) indicate that yearly, young Americans contract STDs, affecting their college lives and fertility. In the illustration, the CDC (2016) shows that young women or female college students become infertile yearly because of STDs. In this case, nearly 20 000 young women become infertile because of STIs they acquire at youthful and adolescent stages of their lives (CDC, 2016). Besides, because of STDs, college students face challenges completing education programs in time. Further, STDs affect college students’ performances, hindering them from accomplishing their academic goals (Cuffe, Newton-Levinson, Gift, McFarlane, & Leichliter, 2016). In general, stakeholders in the healthcare and education sector should invest resources to reduce the prevalence of STDs among college students because of the aforementioned social and economic impacts.

2. The Burden of STI on College Students in the U.S

a. University of South Carolina (USC) Upstate (2018) demonstrates that in the U.S, approximately 25% of college students contract STDs yearly. This means that for every four students in college institutions, one contracts an STI. For instance, USC Upstate (2018) shows that Gonorrhea, Syphilis, and Chlamydia are highly prevalent in 25% of college students in the U.S because of irresponsible sexual behaviors.

3. My Interest in the Topic

Being a college learner enhanced my interest in the “Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDS) Among College Students” topic. The issue besides, my friends have been victims of public health issues during their college lives. Hence, studying the topic will improve my knowledge about the critical causes of STI prevalence in college students. The study will also improve my understanding of reducing the STIs spread to promote health as a college student.
