Assessment 1: Proposing a New Initiative
Proposing a New Initiative
The goal of the Cajon Valley Union School District (CVUSD) is to have healthy and happy students, on a path to gainful employment. CVUSD consists of twenty-eight schools in and around a major city and suburban area. The district currently has over 17,000 students’ grades preschool through 12th grade. California state currently requires school aged children to have oral health exams going into Kindergarten. Each school is required to turn in an Oral Health Report to the state each school year to track how many students are in compliance with oral health exams. Oral health is important to all students and all student would benefit from dental screenings and oral health education.
A Proposal for Dental Screening to Students
Dental screening at school is explained as inspection of the oral cavities of students in the school setting, followed by informing their parents of their oral health and treatment needs. The screening aims to find students at an earlier stage, thus encouraging preventive and therapeutic oral healthcare for students. This will be achieved when school districts connect with local health/dental agencies to administer free screening. This proposal will explain the suggested service line. These economic factors will affect the provision of dental screening, demographic data and its viability on helping students attain their oral healthcare well-being.
Service Line
San Ysidro Health (SYH) is proposing a partnership with CVUSD with the objective to improve the quality of children’s lives by providing no cost dental screenings, exams and treatment to CVUSD students. Students need not miss school for completing state mandated Oral Health Assessment forms. SYH can complete them on campus. With parental consent, SYH will provide scheduled on campus comprehensive dental screening including, varnish and fluoride treatments, a check for tooth decay and other dental problems by Pediatric Dentists. Flyers and consent forms will be provided to each participating classroom in advance of the scheduled screening. SYH will determine the oral health status for each student and share with the school nurse. A Dental Report Card will be provided to the student’s parents. A referral to a dental provider will be provided, if needed. Education for students and families will be provided by registered dental assistants.
Outcomes of Service Line
The proposed service line is developing a school-based dental health program basing on the approach of partnering the school district with local health/dental centers ensuring students receive free dental screening and improving their oral health (Garcia et al., 2021). Preventing tooth decay is vital throughout the life of any individual, but intervention will be crucial for primary school-age children. Developing a school-based dental health program will be very effective in addressing the student’s health necessities. This service line will reduce dental decay, pain and other complications for the students and improve access to dental screenings and care.
School districts are opportune in eliminating health disparities as more than 50 million children in the United States attend public schools (Garcia et al., 2021). There is a need for the schools to partner with local health centers to promote the well-being of the students and eliminate the cases of missing class time because of illnesses such as tooth decay. Many students in the district are from low-income families. The program intends to reach students from low-income families who have minimal opportunities to access private dental care (Garcia et al., 2021). The program will consist of dental screening, fluoride treatments, dental cleanings and care and oral hygiene education. These services will be provided by certified dental professionals. The students will be asked questions regarding their dental care at home, knowledge of oral hygiene, if they are experiencing any pain or detecting any unusual feeling in their teeth. Screenings will take place at the school site during the school day. The school nurse will coordinate with the healthcare center to schedule and facilitate. The school nurse will provide a schedule to teachers to know when and where to send their students.
Economic Factors
This proposal offers an economic opportunity to both the micro and micro levels. In the department of dental professionals, they will be employed to administer screening to the students from the public schools. Neighborhoods will be aware of the potential benefits of screening and preventing tooth decay; therefore, it will be cost-effective to them (Mason et al., 2019). Also, the organization responsible for screening the students the dental problems will gain popularity with their well-offered services. Similarly, the community surrounding the school consists of parents and community partners. The parents of the students will have been assisted on their responsibility of taking their children to screen, which is costly as it was delivered to them freely at school. Equally, some business opportunities will be created by businesses’ in the area as they will sell some equipment such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and other dental kits.
This program offers moral and cultural equality on the advancement of quality care to all students. CVUSD comprises students from different backgrounds, races and cultures. It is expected that there are many inequalities in administering healthcare, such as according to social class, culture, and the ability to pay (Wesson et al., 2019). In this service line, the central ethical principle will be equity as all students are offered screening equally instead of discriminating them according to race and culture. Dental professionals are urged to acknowledge the importance of equity in their practices and attaining the best care. The economic and demographic factors such as the population of the students in schools, level of education, social status and their health necessities. Starting with the economic status, many students who attend CVUSD are low-income. This inhibits them from affording the appropriate dental screenings and care. Therefore, this implies that they have a high demand for screening services; hence, it is essential to freely offer dental screening (Hussain et al., 2018). Secondly, on education levels, school aged students have little knowledge of recognizing any dental problems. The students lack the appropriate awareness in making preventive measures on dental problems. Thirdly, the demand for healthcare is established upon felt necessities. Regarding the economic and demographic factors of the students, it is evident that they are in high demand for dental screening and should be offered to them accordingly.
Research has shown that some students’ have parents who do not bother with addressing the dental concerns or taking them to the screening services (Lambert et al., 2017). It is also seen that because the students come from low-income families, they do not drink safe water and not brushing their teeth after every meal (Lambert et al., 2017). This service line will be helpful to the students and their families as it is cost-effective, and it will attain the benefits of improving oral health through offering free screening.
Conclusion
Providing free dental screenings to students supports the district’s goal of having healthy and happy students, on a path to gainful employment. This proposal has described the partnership of CVUSD with SYH on the service line to offer free dental screening to all students, economic factors such as not being able to afford the screening services while they are really in demand, demographic factors such as the student’s need for dental screening and the environment that they live. This program also focuses on equality of service provision to all students of all cultures and all races. As this service line is cost-effective, the author recommends it to be implemented as it will help improve the oral healthcare of the students in the district.
