Adaptation and Personal Connection – The Time Machine by H.G. Wells
Screen playwriting changes over time, and a single film can be revised to make changes to the original movie. The adaptations are meant to address the flaws and interests of the viewers about the previous versions. An example of a screenplay that has undergone several adaptations in the Time Machine by H.G. Wells following the original novel and film casting. The film is about a time machine that enables the protagonist to travel through time into the future, where he discovers several changes in the human race by the effect of technology. Having an interest in knowing the future makes the film’s protagonist build a time machine that takes him to the future. Some adaptations of the film are the 1960, 1978, and 2002 adaptations that employ different screenplay versions and characterization. In this article, I tend to write a 2021 adaptation of The time machine by H.G. Wells and connect with it.
Because we live in an era where technology has taken a critical part in human operation and activities, I would change The Time Travel film to accommodate all the sides of technology and its effects.
The protagonist of the 2021 version will be a young Native American scientist who has just finished college, tried various job opportunities but has not managed to secure one since almost all the jobs he is well equipped to handle are done by robots and machines. He grows suspicious to know what the future holds for human beings considering that robots take most job opportunities he has tried to secure. He resends to working in the college library, where he comes across a book about time travel, borrows the book, takes it home, and that night he stays up all night reading the book. Being that he is a scientist, he starts gathering equipment and resources to start building a time machine to have a peek at what happens to humans in the future due to the effects of technology and science.
This adaptation will address the side effects of technology on human lives. Technology has seen the evolution of human activities and has contributed to a significant positive change in human lives; however, it slowly and negatively impacts human lives, as addressed in the other adaptations of the film. This adaptation will still touch on the side effects of technological evolution but in a different way by changing the antagonists. With the natural segregation of human beings that sees people of varying economic classes having varied opinions, this adaptation will have the antagonists-Morlocks changed. They will be living on land while the Elois are living under the ground for fear of being tamed by the Morlocks. This will make the movie original, and only the role plays are shifted.
The future in which the protagonist travels is too imaginary to believe by the audience; hence I will make changes to accommodate a time when the protagonist can see some of his generations. I think that the previous adaptations did not work because the time in which the protagonist travels is too far when no one is sure if the human race will still be existing. This adaptation will only touch on five thousand years or less to make the film a bit realistic. The antagonists will also be a cyborg in nature and their operations and activities controlled by a computer a means by which they can be shut down and human race restored to the current form. Also, the location of the events will be in the United States since the country has an excellent level of advanced technology compared to other nations.
In the cinematic role of the adaptation, the protagonist will have an opportunity to battle with the antagonists but will not return home since he would have destroyed all the machines. In the process of battling the Morlocks, the time machine would have been destroyed, and the protagonist will have nothing to return home with since he will have peace and more comfort living with the Eloi people. The new world would be like starting afresh, having the Eloi people as the only remaining human race. One of the reasons I will make the protagonist remain in the future is that he will find love among the Eloi people. It would be devastating for both of them to leave each other, being that the protagonist was a struggling young scientist with no lover before time traveling. Society of Eloi people will accept him more than society before time traveling.
I will make these changes to bring social acceptance and segregation that current society members face due to different economic class levels and human activities due to the machine and technology inventions. Also, the changes will be made since many youths are educated, but there are no jobs due to the invention of technologies; thus, it is only the creativity of each individual that will enable one to secure a source of earning and income. With the fast-growing population and academic advancement, the contemporary issue in current society is unemployment since many people are educated but are not creative enough to secure jobs. Also, children live off their parent’s wealth. Thus, the protagonist of this new adaptation will be an orphan with a struggling background but lacks connection to help him secure a job.

Pears Leasing is a reputed leasing company and has recently set up an information system to improve sustainability and social responsibility practices within the business. The company has its head office in Brisbane and branches in other capital cities in Australia with a population of more than 35 000 people.
Pears Leasing now a days is concerned about sustainability initiatives in a bid to create an impact towards the community and get closer to their customers. One of the underlying principles of Pears Leasing is to focus on sustainable environment, corporate foundations, employee volunteer programs, and donations to charity etc. It actively promotes environmental management in all of the company operations. It sponsors a program that provides scholarships to disadvantaged students to allow them to attend university, and it is proud to offer employment in
the company to long-term unemployed and the poor. Each year it publishes a sustainability report that summaries its achievements across each area of performance.
Over time these activities have become a marketing strength of Pears. The social and environmental stance taken by the company has attracted many customers to the company. Listed on the Australian Securities Exchange in 2003, the company has also become a preferred investment of ethical and green investment funds.
The mission statement of Pears states that it will aim to:
Support employees in achieving their personal and career goals.
Act in a socially responsible way when dealing with insurance clients and the general community.
Promote a better social and physical environment for the world.
However, the current CEO, Michelle Smith, thinks that the firm has become complacent and is resting on its past achievements. She is concerned that the firm has built up a reputation for good social and environmental practices but is not ‘walking the talk’. There is some level of discontent among employees about the way that management treats staff, and this is impacting on employee satisfaction. There have also been negative reports in the media of its treatment of businesses in Phuket and Langkawi that were damaged in the December 2004 tsunami. The reports claim that the company has tried to minimise the amounts paid to these businesses by strictly applying clauses in the insurance contracts that cover earthquake damage but not flood damage.
In 2004, the company’s profit rose by 10 per cent to $125 million on an asset base of $1550 million. This is the third consecutive year of increased profits. Earnings per share were 52 cents, and the market value was $5.30 per share. The board is concerned that Pears makes a loss on its business, while its investments yield a strong return and are the main reason for the increase in profitability. Its investment portfolio includes shares in NAB, Telstra and James Hardie Industries.
The board adopts a sustainability approach to viewing its performance and uses the following key performance indicators to assess company performance:
