According to the North Carolina state laws, chapter 50 B clearly states that domestic violence is a crime. According to the law, domestic violence is the performance of one or more of the following acts by a person with whom the aggrieved party has or has had a personal relationship. The first act, according to the chapter, is causing bodily injury on someone intentionally or attempting to cause bodily injury, placing the life of the complainant or a member from the aggrieved party’s household or family in fear of serious physical harm or harassment to the point of inflicting substantial emotional distress Personal relationships, in this case, means former or current spouses, people of the opposite gender who are living together or have ever lived together, individuals related as siblings or parents, people who have given birth in common and persons who are former or current household members.

Domestic violence is a widespread issue in the US and worldwide, affecting approximately ten million victims annually, whereby one in every four women is a victim of domestic abuse (Buzawa & Buzawa 2017). Almost every healthcare professional has encountered or treated a victim prone to domestic abuse. Some common forms of domestic violence are sexual, economic, physical, emotional, psychological, and mental abuse of children. Domestic violence may lead to distortion of both psychological and physical health and declining quality of life, productivity, and in some circumstances, it may cause fatality. Spotting domestic and familial abuse may be difficult in some societies, and many cases may go unreported to legal authorities or medical personnel. Domestic violence costs the US economy more than $12 billion each year due to low productivity in people. Over the next 20 years, the number of people afflicted is predicted to climb, increasing the aging population (Buzawa & Buzawa 2017).

Domestic abuse legislation has been passed in numerous states; however, many of these laws have yet to be enforced. Appropriate government structures, sufficient resources, and political will are all required for effective implementation. Well-crafted legislation can pave the way for efficient execution. The ruling should indicate that the bodies in charge of enforcing the law must collaborate with people in society who are affected by domestic abuse. Some of the bodies that are encouraged to come out in the community to fight domestic violence include NGOs, the police, courts, prosecutors, healthcare centers, and learning institutions. To guarantee the complete and timely implementation of the legislation, these bodies should push for relevant sectors to produce protocols, domestic violence regulations, directives, and standards addressing these concerns. Another important tool for implementing this policy is encouraging training and seminars about domestic violence on women and responding to women and children’s domestic problems. The programs should also teach about avoiding victimization among women and children and ensure regular safety assessments are conducted to ensure the issue of domestic violence is eradicated. The UN General Assembly, for instance, has advocated the use and enforcement of such laws and resolved to use its powers to strengthen and prevent violence against women.

Domestic violence is a huge public health concern around the world. According to the WHO, up to 71 percent of women aged between 18 to 60 who are engaged or have been in a relationship have undergone emotional, physical, or sexual violence, and between 15 and 29 percent of women worldwide have encountered various forms of abuse (Buzawa & Buzawa 2017). Most legal systems regarded wife-beating punishments as a husband’s prerogative over his wife in the 1800s. Domestic violence was viewed as a crime against the community rather than just the individual lady by prosecuting wife-beating as a breach of peace in English common law dating back to the 16th century (Wachter & Heffron 2019). Wives had the right to seek restitution from a local justice of the peace in the form of a peace bond. No legal advice stated the threshold of proof or degree of violence that would suffice for a conviction, and procedures were informal and off the record. In relationships, tensions rising from isolation, misunderstanding power, and control, traumatic bonding with the abuser, cultural acceptability, lack of financial resources, fear, shame, or protection children may keep victims imprisoned in domestic violence situations (Wachter & Heffron 2019). Physical limitations, dysregulated aggressiveness, adverse health problems, limited resources, and broken relationships are all possible abuse outcomes. Victims may have serious mental illnesses, such as depressive disorders. Most kids brought up in such violent surroundings are most likely to experience psychological concerns such as fear and anxiety to threats, avoidance, and emotional dysregulation, leading to vicarious trauma and other disorders.

There are major inconsistencies between the content of domestic policies and their execution in the healthcare system. When it comes to getting health care, survivors of domestic violence confront numerous obstacles. One of the major challenges is the health staff’s lack of knowledge and competence. Some health practitioners are rarely trained in violence screening and counseling. Another stumbling block to the implementation of this policy is the scarcity of skilled social workers. Only a few social professionals in the healthcare system are specifically responsible for assisting domestic violence survivors.
