I do not think there is a secret to an innovative

I do not think there is a secret to an innovative organization, however, I do think there are some rules that apply to keep an organization moving forward. So many things can depend on whether or not an organization is successful in relation to being innovative. Some of these factors are also a little more out of their control than others are. As an example, a couple of factors that are hard to control would be the political environment and social stability. Now both of them can be predicted to a degree if an organization is paying attention to the underlying factors around them but also play a part in innovation as well. According to the text, there are three A’s of an innovative organization, those being adaptability, agility, and ambidexterity (MItra, 2017). The definition of an organization changes from source to source. Harvard Business Review states the innovative organization follows these seven principles, “tolerance for failure but not incompetence, Willingness to Experiment but Highly Disciplined, Psychologically Safe but Brutally Candid, Collaboration but with Individual Accountability, and Flat but Strong Leadership” (HBR, 2019).

Innovation can occur in both large and small companies. Developing a new product or idea can ideally be easier for a smaller company for a few reasons. The smaller company has more time to execute an idea quickly and can maneuver easier without having to go through the number of levels of approval in comparison to a larger company. Another advantage of a smaller company is the ability to allocate or reallocate resources to a new idea faster in comparison to a larger business. However, a larger company often has a bigger pool of resources to source from as well as it often being departmentalized and having focus groups for specific ideas. There are pros and cons to innovation in both large and small businesses.

I am going to use the military as both a positive and negative example of a company that supports innovation under certain management or leadership styles. I was in the military for over twenty years and have seen the best of management and the worst. The best leadership always encouraged innovation and collaboration, they knew more heads were better than one. Tapping into a larger network almost always meant more productivity, which is what any company wants at the end of the day. The management was generally clear and concise on what they wanted to see happen and did not care if the solution came from the newest member of the oldest. For me, these were always the easiest management styles to work for, you knew what was expected and the day-to-day operations rarely changed. Morale was generally high and people enjoyed coming to work. Then of course you have the management style that the only good ideas were their own, this typically led to a lot more work or even wasting time redoing a task to find out it could have been done a different way that was brought up from the start. Generally lower morale and lack of innovation from anyone other than management.

An example of a company that failed to continue to innovate would be Tower Records. I like to use this as an example because it is one of my favorite movies (Tower Records) and I loved visiting the stores. Tower Records was an innovator in the music industry from 1960-2004. They were one of the first companies to create a store that was geared towards the mega music industry, offering all genres of music and not focusing on just one. The company fell short in many areas in the early 2000s. I believe the biggest reason the company failed was the failure to adapt. I think that can be directly tied to the management of the company as well. Management’s ultimately responsible for the vision of a company and where it plans to be in X years. It does not matter where the innovation comes from but they have to monitor it and ensure the concepts are heading in the right direction. Ultimately the largest contributing factor was keeping up with technology that led to the bankruptcy of the company. Specifically, iPod, piracy, and digital music sharing apps that cut into the music industry so deeply. Management could have seen this coming from miles away and possibly intertwined with companies such as Spotify or Pandora for example.
