The theory of reasoned action examines the relationship between attitudes and behaviors within a human action. Additionally, it is used to predict how individuals will behave based on their preexisting attitudes or behavioral intentions (Hackman et al., 2014). According to Hackman et al., 2014), the theory of reasoned action has been used effectively when working with a subgroup of people who have diabetes specifically. The theory of reasoned action and planned behavior are closely associated (Rural Health Information Hub., n.d.). The theory of reason action is unique because it is used to explain and predict behavior based on attitudes, norms, and intentions.

Diabetes has become a major global public-health challenge and is one of the highest leading causes of death in most developed countries (Didarloo et al., 2014). In a case study about women and diabetes, Didarloo et al., (2014) discuss how the theory of reasoned action can be applied to this subgroup population. The process began by having the women take a self-administered survey that would assess their eating behavior. It has been found that lifestyle changes can prevent diabetes and manage blood sugar levels with proper treatment, which reduces further complications. According to Didarloo et al., (2014), those with diabetes are given medical advice that they need to change their diet and have a healthy diet which includes changing food habits (refraining from eating a lot of sugar) and recognizing that this is a lifestyle change and needs to be followed when symptoms are under control. However, Didarloo et al., (2014) report that change in diets for those with diabetes often has a low compliance rate.

Using the self-assessment mentioned above, a provider can use the theory of action to predict factors influencing a patient’s decisions and behavior. This model has three constructs: attitude, subjective norm, and self-efficacy. Moreover, in this study, it was found that the intent of the client and their dietary behavior can be affected by their socioeconomics status/demographic (Didarloo et al., 2014). Given the three constructs, self-efficacy believes that humans are motivated; unless they can produce the desired effects with their own actions, they will have less incentive to face the difficulties before them (Didarloo et al., 2014). Therefore, if a patient with diabetes is not motivated to improve their health or believe they can, their motivation to follow through with their medical treatment is likely unsuccessful.

Socioeconomic status and diabetes have a connection on multiple levels; smoking, not being physically active, and have a high-calorie diet that includes fatty acids and sugar-sweetened beverages are known to increase one’s risk factors in being diagnosed with diabetes (Suwannaphant et al., 2017). Being in low socioeconomic status and education level have been associated with the high rates of a diabetes diagnosis. But according to Suwannaphant et al., 2017), there is disagreement on whether diabetes is a disease of low socioeconomic status, high socioeconomic status, or no relationship between the two.

My question for the class for this week’s post is, do you believe that socioeconomic status and health have a connection, and how can we use behavioral theories to address health concerns for individuals?
