Phase 4 project: Substance abuse in youth
Findings
This phase reports the findings of the study in descriiptive statistics. Therefore, the results are in percentages.
Peer influence
About 80% of the respondents indicated that the influence of their peers is “high.” The other respondents, or 10%, rated it as “mild” and the rest 10% indicated the influence is “extreme.” The number suggests that most young drug users get into the habit via the impact of their friends or peers. The force could happen in school or the community. According to literature, it is the peer who usually introduces young people to drugs. The role and influence of peers are present in online settings. Young people spend most of their time online chatting with friends, commenting on their posts, liking them, and following memes and influencers like celebrities.
Knowledge of drug users
All or 100% of participants indicated that their knowledge of drugs and drug abuse is high. This knowledge involves the dangers of drugs, the risk of overdose, addiction, and other related aspects of drugs and drug use. The findings imply that young people use drugs although they know the risks associated with drug use. The figures also suggest that campaigns designed to educate people on drug abuse have been successful, but young people continue to use them regardless. Therefore, the primary driver of drug abuse is the hidden or structural factors and not a lack of knowledge or information.

Influence of media
50% of the participants said that the impact of media is “moderate.” Another 25% said it is “mild” and the rest indicated it is “extreme.” The influence of the media is both positive and negative, following the results of the study. On the positive side, the media provides information about the risk of drug use. It also gives additional information on how people could kick out the habits and other resources such as the location of rehabilitation centers. The negative side is that some media images, videos, and posts appear to glorify drug use. Some songs suggest that using drugs is desirable, and that negatively affects young people.
The effect of substance abuse among other individuals
About 100% of the respondents said they had witnessed at least one negative impact of the drugs on people or individuals close to them. The individuals could be relatives, peers, neighbors, among others. The negative impact is addiction and loss of job due to the drug habit. Another negative impact cited by the respondents is the involvement in crime and criminal activities and underachievement in school or college. Therefore, the drug habit is harmful to the welfare of people. Drugs can ruin the lives of otherwise good people.
Why do they take the drugs
80% of the respondents said that they take drugs to feel high. Therefore, they take the drugs to make them happy and increase their capacity for dealing with personal problems such as loss, depression, and general failure. Another 20% abuse drugs because they feel compelled as a result of addiction. Impulsive users have been using drugs for an extended period, creating dependence. It is impossible to kick out drug dependence without medical intervention such as methadone treatment or rehabilitation.

How they got introduced to them
90% said that they started the drug habit after the introduction by a peer. The rest indicated that they began the drugs on their own after getting the information from the media. The literature has documented the vital role of peers in initiating people into drug abuse. The findings from the study also support the critical role of friends and peers in drugs use. The media introduced some of the respondents to the drugs in gaming platforms, on social media platforms, and after listening to songs that praised drug use. In the case of marijuana, some songs praise it as a holy herb, which is used for medicinal purposes among the people hence, curing some diseases.
Challenges
70% of the respondents said that they faced challenges related to stopping the drugs. At least 10% of the respondents had tried to stop using the drugs but failed to succeed. The findings indicate a need for a campaign of assistance to help drug addicts receive treatment for their addiction. Only 10% of drug users said they were happy with their current drug use habit and are not looking for assistance. However, at the same time, some said they feared looking for treatment due to the cost and legal action. A possible solution to the drug problem is decriminalizing the possession and use of small amounts of drugs and instead availing more resources for treatment.
The trend in substance abuse and addiction for the recent three years
daily behaviors of drug users
The data shows a trend of increasing drug use. Most young people are now using drugs than any other time due to the influx of those drugs from surrounding countries, despite government efforts to make drug use harder. For the authorities, this suggests a need to invest more time to handle the problem. As already noted, decriminalizing the possession, as well as, the use of small amounts of drugs would make them cheaper in the streets. Therefore, in this case, the trade would be less profitable for cartels and criminal gangs controlling the production and distribution of illegal drugs. That is the only solution that can address the issue.
Their social skills
60% of the respondents have poor to moderate social skills. 20% had good social skills, and another 10% had excellent social skills. The findings support the literature that drug use is an attempt to mask an underlying issue. In this case, young people with poor social skills use drugs to hide them. Therefore, as part of an intervention, it is vital to support young people gain social skills and kicking out the drug habit. Without intervention, most people cannot break free from destructive habits. After all, treating drug addiction alone does not address the underlying mental health problem. The ability to talk with people, as well as, handle social issues, among others, is vital but often overlooked in dealing with the drug issue.
The most commonly abused drugs
The most commonly used drugs are prescriiption medication such as pain killers at 80%. 10% of users said that they use marijuana. The other 10% use a combination of crystal meth and other lab-produced drugs bought online. Prescriiption medications are easy to acquire for most users, but marijuana is also easily accessible in the streets. Those who access illegal drugs online buy them from hidden websites that are only accessible using the onion browser or Tor. Laboratory-produced drugs are also widely used and loved due to their low cost and ease of access. Some participants indicated that they make the drugs in their private labs at home by combining a few ingredients. They learned the art of drug production through online platforms.
Anxiety and depression
Using standardized measures for assessing anxiety and other mental illnesses found that 70% of the participants showed signs of anxiety disorders and other mental disorders. The symptoms of anxiety disorders are nervousness in social settings, panic, fear, sweating, and a rapid heartbeat. 10% of participants assessed showed signs of depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorders, but the rest did not show any mental health issues. The findings suggest that drug use is also related to the presence of poor mental health. In poor households, where there are different problems, including domestic violence, young people start using drugs early to self-treat their underlying mental health issues.
Conclusion
The findings of the study show that, in general, more young people are using drugs than the older population in the society. In addition, the role of peers is vital in initiating people into drugs, and the media has a significant role to play as well. However, the most significant finding from the study is that most drug users suffer from mental health users that range from poor social skills, anxiety, and depression. Thus, drug use is an attempt at self-treatment. Moreover, although most drug users want to stop the habit, a lack of resources and treatment holds them back. Thus, there is a need to invest in the provision of free treatment for drug use. Early intervention is a better approach to dealing with substance abuse in teenagers because of the high cost of treating addiction and the comorbid mental health issues.

Brief Research Statement: School Safety in the US

The research will evaluate the importance of school safety for American children due to the rise in gun violence crimes and school fires. Its purpose is to raise awareness regarding the school safety of these children. The study will use various research questions as a pathway to provide a brief discussion regarding the safety of school children in the state of California. Some of these research questions include the timeline in which the new safety measures are to be implemented in the public schools in California, the effects of the implemented safety measures, reasons for the implementation, and the specific schools in which the safety measures will be implemented. The research will analyze the various types of safety that will be addressed, including physical, biological, and psychological safety. The research will use a qualitative research design to utilize data collected from various interviews with the various school students to determine their perspectives on what they feel should be addressed. The interviews’ data is from 936 school officials in several high schools in the United States who provide their opinions regarding the various factors that affect their safety at school. The research will use a secondary type of data, where it will use data collected from the school survey done in the years 2007 and 2008 to determine the association between school safety and crime in the nation. Using the data obtained, the research will evaluate the past implemented school safety strategies and their collective impact on school violence indicators still present in many schools. The strategies employed in the study will be grouped into various factors depending on their typology. The research will employ binomial regression analysis to facilitate interpretation of the study’s findings conducted in these schools in California.[supanova_question]
