For this assignment, write a 2½ -to-3-page paper in response to one of the following prompts. Be sure to

back up your claims with specifics from the texts, but also make sure you include analysis and interpretation. Try to achieve a good balance between the two; you don’t want lots of unsupported claims, but you also don’t want a disconnected list of quotes from the text. See Blackboard for guidelines on how to format your paper. Please follow these guidelines.

Use in-text parenthetical citations (MLA format) to show where quotes or paraphrases can be found in the primary texts. You don’t need a Works Cited list unless you draw on a secondary text, and I would encourage you not to do that. Write based on your own reading of the texts, materials I have provided for you, and our class discussions. Please be very careful to avoid plagiarism. The best way to do that is to avoid internet searches, at least until after you’ve written a solid draft based on your own ideas. If you do

take language or ideas from a source, please be sure to document it.

Choose one of the following:

How is the concept of power represented in the Iroquois and Navajo creation stories? Some possible questions to consider might include the following: who is involved in the act of creation?

What is the relationship between creator and created? or between god, human, animal, and plant?

What is the relationship between worlds, or levels of being, both geographically and temporally?

You might also consider these creation stories in light of other traditions and creation mythologies that you know. How do these stories perhaps indicate that Native people’s values and worldview may differ from those traditions?

Discuss how Columbus’s letter of 1493 reflects a certain worldview and set of values. Who and/or what are deemed valuable and why?

According to Columbus’s account, how are he and the emerging nationstate of Spain justified in their conquest of the islands?

Contrast Columbus’s letters of 1493 and 1503. How are Columbus’s attitudes and purposes different in the letters?

How have his feelings changed about discovery, conquest, and his own position of power?

The lands he describes have changed, but he has also changed. How does his voice and descriptive language convey these changes?

Write an essay about the moral outrage which de las Casas shows in his Very Brief Relation. Where is it grounded? Is it based in a traditional faith? In a kind of secular or nonsectarian humanism? Look at the details that he offers and the adjectives he uses, and try to describe his moral position. Consider also his tone and the voice or persona he adopts.

5. Explain how Cabeza de Vaca’s Relation shows his unique relationship to the Native American people. What moments reveal his respect for and about curiosity about the people? Is his thinking unorthodox for the time? How is he different from other Spaniards, or “Christian slavers” that the people encounter?

6. Given where he came from (Spanish nobility) and how he arrived at the “new world,” (foiled mission of conquest and shipwreck) can Cabeza de Vaca’s Relation be seen as story of self-reinvention? And if so, what are the forces that contribute to his reinventing himself? How does his religious faith play a role?

The kindness of the people he lives among? His own perseverance?[supanova_question]
