Background

Women of color, defined as women who are non-white, make up 20% of the United States’ population (Scott & Elliott, 2020). However, despite representing a large minority of the population, women of color face unique intersectionality of bias and discrimination in the workforce (Popat & Starkey, 2019; Scott & Elliott, 2020). Intersectionality in this study will refer to the combination of bias and discrimination experienced by an individual with two or more stigmatized identities (Hodari, 2017). As both women and individuals from racial minority groups, women of color experience discrimination both as a woman and as a person of color; that combination may create a more extreme form of bias than what is faced by most men of color and most White women (Hodari, 2017).

While women of color could experience bias and discrimination in any sector of the workforce, there are fields in which they are underrepresented, such as in information technology. According to Scott & Elliott (2020), women of color earn less than 10% of computer science undergraduate degrees in the United States, and they are equally, if not more, underrepresented in the field after graduation, with African American, Latinx, and Native American women holding less than 6% of computer science and information technology jobs in Silicon Valley. Not only does the underrepresentation of women of color in the information technology field limit the economic abilities of individuals, but it also limits companies’ abilities to fulfill their hiring needs (Scott & Elliott, 2020). Undersupply of individuals qualified to fill information technology jobs entering the workforce in California, Virginia, Texas, Washington, the District of Columbia, and Florida underlines the importance of developing and retaining the information technology workforce (Wright, 2013).

There is reason to believe that underrepresentation of women of color in information technology is partly due to bias and discrimination that participates in their early departure from the field. (Ong et al., 2017) found that women of color often report isolation in information technology fields and that that isolation can both exacerbate the stereotyping and discrimination they experience as well as cause them to feel uncomfortable in the workplace. Agarwal (2020) cites a poll conducted by Studio Graphene, which found that half of women (49%) have encountered some type of workplace discrimination, and a fifth (20%) have quit in the past due to workplace discrimination or harassment. According to the survey, the majority of respondents (60 percent) believe that a lack of diversity in the tech sector is a problem, though women are more likely than men to believe this (66 percent versus 56 percent), which is an interesting reflection on how men and women perceive the status quo differently, due to their own status and role in society and in the organization (Agarwal, 2020).

Problem Statement

The problem this study will attempt to represent is the barriers women of color experience entering and remaining in the information technology workforce. Women of color represents Despite representing 20% of the United States population, despite the numbers, women of color earn less than 10% of computer science undergraduate degrees (Scott & Elliott, 2020). There are several barriers beyond the difficulty of the course material that may prevent or discourage women of color from pursuing degrees in information technology, and once in the field, may precipitate an early departure from a career in information technology (Ong et al., 2017). Women of color face isolation in information technology areas, according to Ong et al. (2017), which exacerbates stereotype activation because they are often the only person in the room who looks like them. The U.S. government and nonprofits have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in programs designed to train and support women of color in information technology and computer science fields, but disparity persists (Popat & Starkey, 2019). This limits women of color’s economic mobility, and limits companies’ abilities to fulfill their hiring needs (Scott & Elliott, 2020). The urgency of this problem is exacerbated by the undersupply of individuals qualified to fill information technology jobs entering the workforce in California, Virginia, Texas, Washington, the District of Columbia, and Florida (Wright, 2013). In California, Virginia, Texas, Washington, the District of Columbia, and Florida, there are between 1,000 and 6,500 more job openings than expected degree completers in information technology, a trend that is expected to continue for years to come (Wright, 2013).

Research Methodology and Design

A qualitative descriptive design, according to Holly (2014), is utilized when an easy explanation is desired that concentrates on the facts of what, where, when, and why an event or experience occurred. As such, we utilized a qualitative descriptive design to answer these questions, (1) how do women of color who are looking for a job in the information technology field describe the experience? (2), how do women of color who recently left a position in the information technology field describe their motivation for leaving? Qualitative approaches put an emphasis on the subjective experiences of individuals rather than relying on numerical values and statistical analysis to make sense of a phenomenon (Silverman, 2016). A qualitative methodology is the appropriate approach for this study because this method encourages participants to be reflective of their own experiences and uses their perceptions to make sense of a phenomenon or experience (Silverman, 2016). A quantitative design, on the other hand, would have been less appropriate for the current study, according to Silverman (2016), because quantitative methods aim to answer research questions through numerical means, which cannot often portray the nuance of experiences as effectively as qualitative data.

In descriptive research, the research attempts to describe the participants’ experiences. This design is appropriate when the presence of a phenomenon is verified, but it is not well understood (Flick, 2019). This design often asks how or why questions (Flick, 2019). Other qualitative designs would be less appropriate. Phenomenology, for example, relies on the careful description and analyses of subjects’ experiences or “life worlds” and the meaning and understanding subjects apply to their experiences (Flick, 2019). Phenomenology would not be appropriate for the study as the researcher does not seek to understand how the participants experienced a particular phenomenon through an exploration of their lived experiences (Flick, 2019). Ethnography would not be appropriate in this study as the ethnographer immerses themselves in a community and explores the themes that emerge. By exploring the themes that emerge the ethnographer does not seek to describe a particular phenomenon but rather is guided by what arises naturally from their observations (Flick, 2019). A narrative approach will also not be appropriate for the study as a narrative approach seeks to weave together a sequence of events, rather than describing a specific phenomenon (Flick, 2019). A case study seeks to combine multiple data sources to explain an event or organization and is therefore not appropriate as the proposed study seeks to explore a phenomenon as they are described by the participants, rather than combining multiple data sources to derive meaning (Flick, 2019). Grounded theory will also not be appropriate for the study as grounded theory explores process, action, and interaction to develop a theory that is based on observations (Flick, 2019). This will be at odds with the goal of the study, which is to understand and explain the lived experiences of participants to describe a phenomenon.

Research Questions

The purpose of this study is to describe the barriers women of color face entering the information technology field and the motivators for leaving the information technology field that they experience. To address this purpose, the following research questions will be asked:

RQ1. How do women of color who are looking for a job in the information technology field describe the experience?

RQ2. How do women of color who recently left a position in the information technology field describe their motivation for leaving?

Post Research Paper and Peer Comments, Read ahead of time.

Now that you have explored Design Elements from Project 1, you have a short  paper to research and present.

This is one page, horizontal format, select the work of 2 artists, one male, one female and layout side by side.

You chose their work because you find a Dominate Design Element visual in their work.

You post an image and list this dominate element below image, in bold, followed by artist name, title, date, size, material and location of installation.

Explain what  makes this element visual, how did artist use it and some other interest about the artwork.

The image you choose must be 3 dimensional, no paintings or flat work.  It can be sculpture, architecture, installation, unique product or environmental art. Do not copy description from source, use your own words to describe how this element is used.  At times, there will be other elements you can reference, but find the dominate, most visual one.

See the sample below for layout.  Submit as jpeg through the  photo or file icon upload so it is opened up for us all to see. You can search on internet or you can find sources in library or actual works that you encounter and take your own photos.

Do a Peer Comment: You are to select one student report of choice, long as it has not been reviewed already, and comment on the works:

What interests you about this artwork, what can you share with student as a reference (eg: reminds you of, what you appreciate, did you see this? etc.)

Do you see this design element listed or another?

Refer, in a sentence, to another students research that states same design element.  Respond to both of the artworks posted,  in the reply box under student post.  Please address student by name at top ( ex: Hi Jim).

You can review vocabulary in Orientation Module 0, 3D Design vocabulary.  This paper is about Design Elements: Line, types of Plane (compound, complex, curvilinear), Cross Contour, Spatial Volume (pos/neg space), Mass, Light and Texture.  Later in semester you will do another Research Paper based on Design Principles, which we study in Project 3.   For research ideas, look again Module 0, Student Resource, for suggested artists, you can also find your own study by search online.

View 2 Student Research Paper Samples below: please submit larger so I can see and read this. Use the large option in RCE, not custom. Compose and post as a document, text icon above. 8.5″ h x 11″ w, be sure your name, class and date are included. As mentioned earlier, does not need to be architecture.  It could be as discovered as the form and function of vessels for yacht racing.

From an early age, the value of education has been ingrained in me. Being raised by a single mother who earned her master’s degree in social work, with the help of her mother(grandmother) whom had an sixth grade education. they continuously stressed the importance of having a successful career. However, in order for that to happen you must learn the basics and keep updating your mental software. This letter explains why their has been a discrepancy in previous academic performance.

I struggled early in my academic years with balancing life dilemmas, educational requirements and retaining new information. Anatomy and physiology was a course that i was excited to participate in, unfortunately the information, the lack Of studying techniques, not being aware of school resources and advocating for myself to Instrustor. Resulted in me failing & retaking the course. Later not allowing that experience to dictate when I entered Anatomy and physiology II, I Excelled academically. From my early academic short comings, by the time I started my core classes in my social work curriculum such as human behavior I/II and research in social welfare I/II. I knew what I needed to do. I knew how to communicate with my instructors.

Through my numerous mistakes and failures, I’ve developed a clear vision of the world I want to see, as well as a profound understanding of how I can contribute to making that vision a reality in my life. Attending school has always been my ultimate ambition, and I hope that despite my temporary academic shortcomings doesn’t negatively impact my future at this school.
