You will conduct an informal interview with someone you know. It can be a family member, neighbor, or co-worker, among others, and preferably someone who has voted. The purpose of the interview is to understand your interviewee’s perceptions of bilingual education—a controversial, misunderstood topic and one that is voted upon by the public. Your paper will be a reflection of your interview.
*You should record your interview and/or take notes so that you can capture direct quotes and nonverbal communication (hesitation, changes in tone of voice, etc.)
Suggested Questions:
What does it mean to be bilingual?
What is bilingual education?
When did bilingual education start in the U.S.?
Who participates in bilingual education?
Have you personally experienced bilingual education? In what way?
Has someone you know experienced bilingual education? In what way?
In what ways is bilingual education a federal government issue?
In what ways is bilingual education a state government issue?
In what ways have you heard of bilingual education mentioned in the news or media?
Describe a time when you voted upon an issue related to bilingual education?
*If your interviewee does not know the answer, encourage him/her to make an educated guess.
**If you find your participant talking more about native-English speaking language majority students learning a “foreign” language, encourage them to think of language minority students learning English.
Write up your interview in narrative form (3-4 pages)
Write your name and indicate a title that summarizes your paper. You may insert sub-headers throughout the paper as you wish.
Introduce your interviewee. Describe him/her – how do you know this person, what is his/her demographic information, occupation, education level, family (children, siblings, etc.). You may indicate a pseudonym for your interviewee if you wish for your participant to remain anonymous. (1-2 paragraphs)
Describe what you learned from the interview. Please insert direct quotes from your participant. What connections can you make with class material? (2 pages)
Reflect on the interview. How did it go? (1 page)
Castañeda v. Pickard case.
Consider the Castañeda v. Pickard case. How did it further define the previous policies affecting English learners? With more than half of Willacy county’s population being Mexican American, do you think the Raymondville Independent School District was discriminating against the Mexican-American population by not hiring Mexican-American teachers? Do you think schools should give teachers, specifically in this case Mexican-American teachers, an incentive (higher wage, job security etc.) to teach in this school district to best educate this population of students? Writing Assignment Help Introduction to Research Methods
ASSIGNMENTS – ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY – 30%
MODE: Individual
Choose one of the following topics that most interests/inspires you and write a thoughtfully organized, annotative bibliography. The assignment requires you to formulate a thesis and to defend this thesis with reasonable argument in the introductory paragraph. Six annotations from reputable sources are required. Each annotation should be about 200 words in length. The paper should be 1500 words (5% above or below the word limit is permitted).
Topics
Blended and online learning: preparing high school students for higher education
OR
Important of content knowledge in the teaching of mathematics at the secondary level
Instructions
Provide a working title (if provisional) for your paper.
In an introductory paragraph, state your essay topic and tentative thesis. Include some of the major questions you will be asking in your work, and identify sources that you will use in your research and why – that is, how has it inspired or challenged or otherwise moved you to take it up this topic?
Five of your sources must be from “scholarly sources” [for example, book chapter(s), article(s) from an academic journal; the sixth can be from a source of your choice (Internet/blog, zine, etc)]. Each annotation should be about 200 words in length.
Annotations
The function of the annotations is to provide some information on source content – but also, more importantly, on its relevance to your thesis or line of argumentation. In short, identify what the source is about and how it is useful to you for your paper. For each, be sure to:
summarize the author’s or authors’ main ideas. This requires that you read the source thoroughly yourself and write a summary of the relevant arguments in your own words – do not merely reproduce the abstract or book jacket blurb of the text.
critique the source – that is, assess its strengths and weaknesses, and the implications of the arguments. Give support/examples for your assessments (what, in the text, allows you to make these judgments?).
explain how this source relates to your topic – in particular, how and why you plan to take it up in your paper.
For “b”, some of the things you may wish to consider could include assessment of: the currency, accuracy, location or position of the research or researcher; strength/diversity/breadth of evidence; clarity, organization, accessibility of the arguments; “authority” of the source (this may mean you have to do some internet searching on the author(s) and/or the journal, book, publisher or site in which the information appears. Most importantly, you’ll likely want to focus on the implications of the arguments put forward in the source.
