Introduction

Healthcare is a meaningful and robust field that prospective students should address with effort and understanding. Healthcare management education is the learning given to the medical practitioners or the heads of a medical facility. This faculty requires the medical practitioners to be keen in their decisions in the facilities since they affect the patients in one way or another. The healthcare system should have intelligent individuals that make sure the interests of the patients are met. On the other hand, every facility has different policies, environments, and rules that experience in a particular practice will bring to the job. Are successful healthcare managers just built with job experience but no educational background? Is it still worth investing thousands of dollars in a career in healthcare management? Is it easier, less expensive, and more effective to learn on the job and simply get promoted?

Helping individuals receive care does not only incorporate nursing and treatment activities. Sometimes the inner drive to help patients get the care and healthy lives are too much, but we don’t feel like undertaking the treatment procedures (Wiggins & Bowman, 2000). Numerous career paths do not involve direct care practices to patients as a physician or a nurse. Healthcare management is one of the career paths that does not focus on direct involvement with patient care but instead focuses on healthcare administration which is different from other medical care practices such as nursing (Slyter, 2020).

Healthcare management refers to the administration, oversight, and direction of facilities that offer health services together with the entire health system. The study of healthcare management in contemporary health facilities incorporates diverse study topics (Belker, 2018). Hence healthcare management is relatively a wide area (Morris, 2005). This varied segment of the healthcare systems contains both internal and external domains. The internal areas include:

Organizational budgeting.

Staffing.

Quality of patient care.

Financial progress.

Use of technology.

Quality of service and development of new service.

Healthcare providers’ relations.

External factors that affect morale, such as events and influences occurring outside of the workplace and institution, are commonly beyond the supervisor’s control. These factors, despite their external origins, concern the supervisor because everyone brings their problems to work and does not check them in the morning at the institution’s door or leave them in the vehicle (Dunn & Haimann, 2007). The external fields in healthcare management include:

Licensing.

Community demographics.

Regulations.

Managed Care Organization healthcare insurance.

Medicare and Medicaid.

Aim and Objectives of the Research

To acquire, review, analyze and provide information on the relevance of pursuing a healthcare management course in making an individual competent enough for a healthcare management job. This research also aims at providing other researchers with more information on the responsibilities of healthcare managers.

Research Methods

An abductive approach, including inductive and deductive measures, would be suitable for acquiring the needed information for the research—face-to-face interviews with healthcare practitioners in the facility. Interviewing healthcare managers would be the best source of information. This approach helps acquire data about their line of work, responsibilities, and challenges they face during labor. I will generate interview questions from various theoretical sources and papers which outline the causes of incompetent healthcare management. Questionnaires are also efficient and comprehensive in collecting data from patients about the quality of care they receive and how they perceive the facility’s management level—a collection of survey responses from outpatients and in-patients about the quality of care they received. Group interviews on the facilities workers to distinguish the difference between the incompetent managers (those without degrees in healthcare management) and the professional ones with degrees in healthcare management.

Literature Review

Healthcare management consists of licensed health experts with comprehensive clinical and organizational management skills (Haddock et al., 2002). A Healthcare management degree gives you the required medical knowledge and the business and administration skills needed to ensure efficient management of an organization (Soundering, 2017). An individual with a healthcare management degree is better off for the management job than one who has skills only in medical care (Topchik, 2007). In cases of outpatient consumers, healthcare managers supervise and ensure the appropriateness of consumer care and protect the consumer from unnecessary bills. In in-patient consumers, healthcare managers monitor the progress of the patient and the hospital before, during, and post-hospital admission.

Due to trends and diversity in technology, most management practices require a critical understanding of information technology (IT) to ensure efficient administration (Soundering, 2017). Healthcare management is devoted to modifying and harmonizing consumer and practitioner elements to provide patient care quality.

Healthcare managers play the role of ensuring patient’s security together with the safety of their private information. An informal survey conducted by a small group of business individuals suggests that health workers can solve a healthcare crisis by employing competent healthcare managers (Walshe & Smith, 2006). Several sources claim healthcare management is the sole basis for quality hospital services (Dunn, 2002). Many journal articles and papers providing relevant information about healthcare management responsibilities have been published (Soundering, 2017).

Conclusion

Due to every day changing preferences of humans, constantly changing environment, and upgrades in living standards, all the domains require the critical intervention of healthcare managers to ensure the efficient running of the facility (Topchik, 2007). Among the responsibilities of professionals and healthcare managers are minimizing administration costs, ensuring competent quality is delivered, and facilitating access to managed care.
