CRITIQUE OF A HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW ARTICLE [Insert your article name here]

This is a 1500-word written assessment of an analysis of a Harvard Business Review article. Students are required to analyse the article critically by identifying the theoretical framework, providing a critical literature review of the theory. The theoretical framework can look at focus on motivation, job satisfaction, job turnover, teamwork, leadership theories or any other theories used in the lesson. For critiquing the article, the following points can be used:

What kind of article is it (for example does it present data or does it present purely theoretical arguments)?

What is the main area under discussion?

What are the main findings?

What are the stated limitations?

Where does the author’s data and evidence come from? Are they appropriate / sufficient?

What are the main issues raised by the author?

What questions are raised?

How well are these questions addressed?

What are the major points/interpretations made by the author in terms of the issues raised?

Is the text balanced? Is it fair / biased?

Does the author contradict herself?

How does all this relate to other literature on this topic?

How does all this relate to your own experience, ideas and views?

What else has this author written? Do these build / complement this text?

(Optional) Has anyone else reviewed this article? What did they say? Do I agree with them?

Template for work:

Please note that the template is to give you a suggestive structure. You can be free to adjust it to your own styling and needs. Please then replace the highlighted sections surrounded by [ ] with your own writing.

Abstract (not included in the word count; maximum 150 words)

Summary

You first need to summarise the text that you have read. One reason to summarise the text is that the reader may not have read the text.

In your summary, you will

focus on points within the article that you think are interesting

summarise the author(s) main ideas or argument

explain how these ideas / argument have been constructed. (For example, is the author basing her arguments on data that they have collected? Are the main ideas / argument purely theoretical?)

In your summary you might answer the following questions:

Why is this topic important?

Where can this text be located? For example, does it address policy studies?

What other prominent authors also write about this?

2. Evaluation

Evaluation is the most important part in a critical review.

Use the literature to support your views. You may also use your knowledge of conducting research, and your own experience. Evaluation should be explicit – Explicit evaluation involves stating directly (explicitly) how you intend to evaluate the text.

e.g. “I will review this article by focusing on the following questions. First, I will examine the extent to which the authors contribute to current thought on Leadership styles. After that, I will analyse whether the authors’ propositions are feasible within Small and Medium enterprises in the UK.”

3. Conclusion

Overall assessment of the article, identify potential changes. Ensure your views are rooted in relevant theories and consistent with your arguments in the evaluation.

You will complete this task throughout the term as interim assignments. You will respond to selected questions from the full brief at times during activities in class and continue the writing in greater depth outside of class, before receiving feedback. At the end of the term, you will review all questions in the brief and rewrite previous entries based on feedback.

Guidelines for submission:

You must include a completed and signed assessment form attached at the front of your submission.

Format

Times New Roman, font size 12 (sub-headings, titles allow up to size 14), justified with 1.5 spacing and page numbers (bottom right footer)

Any sources of material used must be properly referenced and cited using the Harvard method of referencing.

Submission Expectations

You will submit each journal entry on Moodle on 13th July, 20th July, 27th July and 10th August 2021(Final) (23:30). You will receive feedback after each submission and you must meet all deadlines set by the tutor.

Notes for alternative submission (exam resit):

Upon failure to complete the task with a pass mark of 40%, you will receive feedback on your final assignment and rewrite the entire journal entry, responding to the same questions set in the task.

*Please note: the nature of the task is personalised and therefore assessed on the depth of self-reflection and clarity of expression. You must therefore ensure your response is sufficiently detailed.

Key Information for task completion:

How have you evaluated the suitability of sources used in your current research (e.g. relevance, academic suitability, authorial credibility)?

How has your background reading helped you to clarify or further refine the focus of your current research in your coursework?

Report on the process you are using to prepare for your group seminars. Have you changed your approach throughout the term? How can you improve in the future?

Explain how you have improved your skills in the areas below:

Selecting appropriate sources and discarding less useful ones

Using the library and online databases

Using efficient reading strategies (scanning, skimming, reading abstracts)
