Although the prevailing thought may be that the forensic setting is full of psychopaths, that is far from the truth. A very limited set of individuals in society meet the criteria for psychopathy, and in fact, the majority of those individuals lead successful lives outside of the forensic setting.
So what is psychopathy? Robert Hare, the forensic psychologist responsible for the development of the construct, as well as the Psychopathy Checklist (PCL, and later the revised version, PCL-R) describes it as a personality construct defined by lack of empathy, impulsivity, grandiosity, callous, and manipulative interpersonal interactions, and the tendency to engage in socially deviant behavior (Hare & Neumann, 2009) .
While psychopathy is not addressed in the DSM 5, most psychologists are familiar with the construct and apply it to their practice. While instruments have been developed to assess for its presence, namely the PCL-R, there is a limited understanding of the mechanisms that cause the disorder.
The information you will review this week will give you a broader understanding of psychopathy and some ideas related to the dysfunctional mechanisms that may cause this personality type. In addition, you will develop an understanding concerning how this pathological form of personality predisposes individuals to risk for perpetration of chronic and severe violence across their lifespan. Finally, you will learn about possible interventions and their efficacy in the treatment of psychopathy.[supanova_question]
