According to the World Health Organization, health promotion is a process of

According to the World Health Organization, health promotion is a process of ensuring people’s health improves by enabling them to gain more control over their health (World Health Organization, 2018). Healthy people 2030 emphasizes health promotion by increasing vaccination rates, thus preventing infectious diseases (Healthy People 2030, n.d). Children and infants require immunization against diseases such as measles, hepatitis, and pertussis. Furthermore, adolescents, adults, and older people also need vaccination. For instance, increasing vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV) in adolescents significantly protects them against the development of chronic infections such as cervical cancer. Older adults, on the other hand, require vaccination for certain diseases such as pneumonia. Generally, certain vaccines are administered to all individuals above six months. Some of these vaccines are given yearly, such as the flu vaccine.

Nurses actively participate in public health by promoting health, preventing diseases, and ensuring environmental safety for the general public. Nurses have also widely participated in the making of health-related policies. Currently, nurses play a vital role in developing medical care plans to address health issues at local, state, national, and international levels. For a health concern such as immunization, nurses are endowed with educating the masses through appropriate and adequate communication techniques and participating in policymaking for appropriate immunization strategies. Health promotion aims to ensure individuals or communities resort to healthy behaviors (Promoting Health for Adults, 2019). Therefore, education on immunization enlightens the understanding masses, mainly adolescents and adults, on all matters concerning vaccination. A health promotion plan for immunization is essential in disseminating this kind of knowledge to the target populations. Health promotion activities include communication, education, and policymaking, as discussed in this paper.

Influenza refers to an infection of the human respiratory system caused by a viral attack that affects the nose and lungs. The causative agents of the disease are usually RNA viruses of the family Orthomyxovirus and are classified into four types; A, B, C, and D. However, the human species are mostly affected by types A and B. The infection usually spread from person to person through contact with infected respiratory droplets. Despite affecting almost every person, influenza infection is affected by the following risky factors; children under the age of 5, people living in care facilities for long, pregnant women, immunocompromised individuals, native Americans, obese people, and people living with chronic illness. Pregnant women in a community are the most vulnerable individuals to influenza attacks. Specifically, this infection can cause complications during the second and third trimesters, such as loss of the unborn, hospitalization, and death of the women (Somerville et al., 2018).

Pregnant mothers are associated with the influenced immune system. Also, during pregnancy, the heart and lungs of the women changes, making them susceptible to infection. Limited prevention of the infection of influenza poses a health risk to the patient. Another risk factor for the influenza virus is age. Underdeveloped children have weak immune systems hence easily attacked. The situation is also the same for the elderly community. Immunocompromised individuals are also at high risk of getting the infection when they come in contact with the virus. Poor living condition with poor immunity makes those people more vulnerable to the disease. It is also selective to race such that more native Americans are at high risk of contracting the influenza virus. The major reason the native Americans are at high risk is their economic and social background. Low social and economic status leads to decreased access to health services and poor living conditions such as overcrowding, among others (Somerville et al., 2018). A very high risk of complications from influenza is experienced for pregnant and native American individuals, old and native, and children of the native American. Reports show that influenza claims a greater number of deaths within the native American community.

Housing conditions should be improved to increase free circulation of air to minimize the chances of infection and ensure a balanced diet and proper feeding to minimize cases of immunocompromised people because of poor diet (Kalil & Thomas, 2019). The Native American community should strive hard to get a higher living standard and increase their social amenities, especially hospitals and other health care centers. It will reduce cases of late diagnosis and treatment of the influenza virus.

Due to the virus’s virulence nature and effects, it is important that people get vaccinated. Influenza is a communicable disease that can spread from one person to another when allowed in the community, increasing the problem. With the low living standard of the native Americans, the use of the influenza vaccine can be the best option to control its spread. The influenza vaccination will reduce the number of people visiting the doctor for treatment, reduce flu-related hospitalization cases, and increase working conditions and yields due to less sickness (Henry et al., 2018).

The vaccine has guaranteed the safety of an individual. It has been used for more than 50 years, therefore, people should be encouraged to protect themselves using it. The vaccine has guaranteed safety with approval from the CDC and Food and Drug Administration, hence higher safety standards. At some point, the vaccine produces limited side effects to the people, which last not more than two days. Such side effects include a stuffy nose, achy hands, and a sore throat (Henry et al., 2018).

The major objective of the assessment is to increase the percentage of people getting the vaccine every year. Achieving the goal demands everyone to be responsible on his/he part. The government should set proper policies to guide the vaccination process and have enough resources to fund the exercise. Health workers should be on the frontline to educate and encourage vulnerable individuals on the importance of taking the vaccine.

Some goals are to experience low expenditure on the treatment of the influenza virus. A high rate of infection can lead to increased medical bills. Treatment and management of these individuals can be very expensive; hence the vaccines will reduce the cost of treating higher living standards. Another goal is to ensure zero mortality from the influenza virus. Vaccination will ensure all immunocompromised individuals such as the aged, children, pregnant women, and people living with chronic disease are safe. It will also reduce the spread from one person to another since it will promote immunity hence lower the chance of infection.

Some additional goals are to increase vaccination rates. Reminders, making vaccinations available in non-traditional locations such as workplaces, and lowering costs are all essential measures for ensuring that more individuals get the flu vaccine. By implementing these goals individuals will have opportunities to ask questions and therefore a chance for health professionals to provide more education for the individuals to have a better understanding of the positive impact of vaccinations as well as go over any hesitation that they may have (Healthy People 2030, n.d.).

The needs of the population eligible for immunization are met by using a sociogram. A sociogram ensures that the healthcare provider understands the factors involved in the issue by identifying the social links, inter-relationships between people, and patterns to deduce information flow within the community and identify vulnerable populations.

In conclusion, the main focus of disease prevention and health promotion is to keep people healthy. Health promotion programs are designed to empower populations to choose healthy behaviors. Health promotion is different from disease prevention because disease prevention aims at reducing the development of chronic diseases. However, wellness is related to disease prevention and health promotion. Disease prevention and health promotion programs target social determinants of health that influence risk behavior. Social determinants of health include political, cultural, social, and economic conditions in which people live and affect their health status. Some of the risk behaviors include lack of physical activities, poor eating habits, and tobacco use.
