As your lecture states for his week, Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) seeks to determine the best ways for treating the population by using scientific principles to analyze and compare different options and interventions. The basic goal of comparative effectiveness research is to produce better information about the care benefits, costs, and risks of treatment options – so that a patient informed decision can be made. Funding the right treatments allows for better treatments. “More clarity about which treatments work best—and for which types of patients—could create potential for shifting money to those interventions and away from less effective treatments” (Altarum, 2020, para. 3). For this week’s discussion, please review this article:

Once article has been read, use the prompts below in addressing it:

Research a current event in which comparative effectiveness research is used, and provide context for the event being described.

What factors were taken into consideration? i.e. cost, nonfinancial incentives, trial or effective treatment, etc.

Was there enough information or a lack of information when trying to make a decision for treatment?

Was there enough financial investment in research to ensure its effectiveness?

How does comparative effectiveness research help in making an informed decision?

Option #1: Updating Your Workplace Wellness Strategy

Read the article:

Jones, D., Molitor, D., & Reif, J. (2019). What do workplace wellness programs do? Evidence from the Illinois Workplace Wellness Study (Links to an external site.). Quarterly Journal of Economics, 134(4), 1747–1791. https://doi.org/10.1093/qje/qjz023

Your organization has approximately 6,000 employees and offers a wellness program that only includes physical wellness. The Vice President of Human Resources has been reading that the future of employee wellness is more holistic and includes other areas of wellness, such as emotional wellness, and wants to update the Employee Wellness Strategy to reflect it.

To begin planning for this update, the Human Resources VP has asked you to prepare a brief Strategy Report that provides objective insight into the future of workplace wellness programs.

Because you have taken a course in population health, you recognize that such a program would benefit not only the employees, but also the organization, community, and society as a whole.

Directions:

Prepare a strategic report for the VP that includes three major sections:

Section 1: Economic effects of preventable health conditions. This section should address costs and work place implications associated with preventable health conditions.

Section 2: The business case for a health and wellness program. This section should emphasize the value of workplace wellness programs to employee, employer, and population health and include information on return on investment or ROI.

Section 3: Future workplace trends. This section should discuss future trends for wellness programs and the related implications for population health.

Recommendation: Make a recommendation for at least one new wellness area where the company should expand and describe why it is important.

Each of the three sections of the report must be supported with at least one peer-reviewed research article, for a minimum total of three credible sources. In addition to the peer-reviewed articles, you may use other credible sources. (Note: You may not use the article linked in this assignment as one of your required sources.) The CSU Global Library is a good place to find your research sources.

Include a brief introduction and a conclusion.

Your paper must be two to three pages in length, not including the required title and reference pages.

Format your entire assignment according to the  CSU Global Writing Center (Links to an external site.).

The CSU Global Library Guide has a research guide for Healthcare Management and Administration along with access to databases, videos, company and industry information.[supanova_question]

A very serious workplace health issue is workplace violence (WPV) in healthcare. WPV can be any threat affecting healthcare workers, patients, visitors, or vendors. It can be a physical threat, intimidation, deceptive or disruptive behavior, or harassment. WPV can have a huge impact, lowering productivity and work functioning. Employees may have feelings of being unsafe, feel angry or isolated, suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, and depression, these are all common (Lanctôt & Guay, 2014).

Turn-over rates, especially of nurses, can provide valuable insight as to the effectiveness of workplace retention after an incident of violence. How the organization responds to incidents has a direct impact on how an employee recuperates and feels about their position going forward. Nurses often work in high stress environments for prolonged periods of time and this can lead to higher disability, depression and unemployment (DailyPay, 2021).

Healthcare must retain stringent adherence to the workplace health of its employees. Chronic disease, work stress and injuries cost billions of dollars a year, reduce productivity and worker safety. Clinicians often work unpredictable, demanding schedules and this can lead to job insecurity around health outcomes (2021). Maintaining vigilance to the well-being of employees aids in employee retention and cost savings.

As the multitude of chronic disease and subsequent disability develop in the workforce, more attention will have to be paid to how each job factor contributes to the overall problem. Employers will have to be proactive in their approach from day one of an employee’s position start to mitigate stress and injury, putting in place policy and engagement efforts to keep their finger on the pulse of their workforce.
