[Requirements from QUANT Syllabus]
The Written Project will be due at 13:30 pm 3 days after the final exam.
I. Write the project into a paper (report) based on the following:
1. Abstract and Introduction. State and motivate a finance issue you wish to address in your project. Summary also the main results. [10%]
2. State your testable hypothesis and possibly the research design (e.g. what tools/statistics you will use to conduct your analysis. For example, you may want to use multiple regression, t-test etc.) [20%]
3. Results. Describe your sample data clearly with the necessarily descriptive statistics. If you construct your own variables for the tests, you need to clearly mention how to generate the variables. Present the results in suitable formats e.g. Tables or figures or charts. Discuss your results/findings e.g. what implications and/or conclusions you can draw from the results. [20%]
4. Conclusion to wrap up your work. Further comments on your analysis etc. [10%]
5. Language and writing. Prevent junk sentences. Readability is important. [10%]
6. Group Presentation, about 15-20 mins in the last class [30%]
7. 30% of the overall assessment will become zero.
8. The report should be on a group basis and <20 pages including everything. Please also have a cover page stating the title of your project and the contributions of each group member.
1. Abstract
Project Background:
With the development of digital currency, the significant correlation between Bitcoin and different types of market indicators has been noticed by many scholars. As one of the earliest and mainstream digital currencies, Bitcoin owns the potential market advantages and the possibility of real currency’s replacement. Our project will mainly focus on several variables including the active trading addresses, S&P 500 indexes, and transaction costs for each trading day in USD. Those factors mainly reflect the impact of the U.S. market and economy, which we assume to be closely generated with the price of bitcoin.
Our Model:
Our project will investigate data in the past 5 years from Jan. 2016 to Dec. 2020 using the multiple linear regression model as follow:
Y=?+?1×1+?2×2+?3×3+?4×4+……+? or Y=?0+?ixi+?
Y: Bitcoin price, ?:Constant term, Xi: Contributing factors, ?i: Regression coefficients, ?: Disturb term
We expect that our contributing factors Xi: the Euro-Dollar exchange rate, the gold price in the US dollar, Nasdaq index/Standard & Poor’s 500, Federal fund rate, US dollar price index, and overall mining cost in the U.S. will be related to the bitcoin price.
Most of our data can be found on Yahoo Finance, Federal Organization, Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index (CBECI), and Investing website. And these data can be gathered from Jan. 2016 to Dec. 2020 daily as our factors.
2. Research background:
Since the innovation of Bitcoin in 2008, the trading of Bitcoin represents the development of electronic payment and gives modern investors a new investing choice. The greatest difference between Bitcoin and traditional currencies is the characteristic of decentralized. It realizes the idea that the currency can circulate freely between private accounts and institutions to optimize competition. It also improves the payment efficiency significantly and also saves the printing, payment costs. With effective and scientific regulation, such kind of digital currency can be better contribute to the implementation of monetary policy.
With the development of digital currency, the significant correlation between Bitcoin and different types of market indicators has been noticed by many scholars. As one of the earliest and mainstream digital currencies, Bitcoin owns the potential market advantages and the possibility of real currency’s replacement.
However, at present, the Bitcoin market does not have very complete and sound international legal supervision measures. This makes Bitcoin more inclined to be an investment method rather than a digital currency in the true sense. Its main trading market is still in the USA.
As a kind of investment product, Bitcoin price has had huge volatility over the last few years. In order to dig into the reasons that contribute to the dramatic volatility of Bitcoin’s price, our group choose a few indexes and factors as the variables that will represent our conjectures, including the gold price in USD, Standard poor 500 indexes, actively addressed of Bitcoin transaction, and the total transaction fees per trading day. These factors mainly reflect the impact of the U.S. market, the macro-economy, and are related to the supply and demand situation of Bitcoin, which we assume to be closely generated with the price.
Through the regression analysis and descriptive statistics, our group verifies the various positive and negative effects of these variables on the price of Bitcoin. The result is generally as follows.

Any topic (writer’s choice)
In this reading response, address the following five (5) questions:1) After choosing your topic and your country, what is a specific outcome that you would like to study in your paper? This outcome should be the thing you would like to better understand. Perhaps this outcome already occurred in the past, but you find it puzzling or intriguing. Perhaps this outcome is something that could occur in the future. In your final essay, you will offer a theory – also known as an argument – about what produced this outcome, or what might produce this outcome in the future. Do not provide your theory yet in this reading response.2) To understand this outcome, who would you define as the key actors? What do their interests seem to be? Remember: When defining actors, we are often simplifying the picture. We might refer to groups of people as a single actor, or we might exclude some actors from our analysis. Briefly justify your approach.3) Recall our definitions of politics from the beginning of the semester. Politics describes relationships involving power or influence. Alternatively, as Harold Lasswell put it, politics is “who gets what, when, and how [or why]?” For your selected topic in your selected country, where do you see relationships of power or influence? Alternatively, where do you see debates about who gets what, when, and how?4) Given your chosen topic and country, do you see elements of bargaining and/or cooperation in the interactions between actors? You might begin by looking at how actors frame (or framed) the situation. Do they discuss it as if it is a “divide the pie” situation or a “grow the pie” situation? Do their actions seem to match their words?5) Finally, what international institutions are relevant for the topic and outcome you have chosen? If these institutions have not shaped outcomes up until now, why do you think that is? Do you see potential for international institutions to play a role in shaping outcomes in the future?Topics:• The COVID-19 pandemic• Interstate war or civil war• Human rights• International trade• Climate change and the global environmentBook link: https://1lib.us/book/5009406/e54567General Instructions:• You must cite at least one reading (https://1lib.us/book/5009406/e54567) from the course and at least one outside source in your response.• If you directly quote or paraphrase someone else’s words – whether from our textbook or another source – you must cite the source to avoid plagiarism.• When citing a source, please use in-text/parenthetical citations.o Instructions on how to do so using MLA style can be found here. o Alternatively, you can use APA style as described here.• At the end of your document, you should also include a reference list or list of works cited.
