Directions: Write a four to five paragraph essay about the theme (the central idea or insight) of one of the short stories we have read thus far this semester. If you wish, you may write about two works which treat a common subject or which share a common theme. Support your thesis with specific references to elements of plot, character, or setting. Organize the paper by listing supporting points rather than by following the plot.
Option 1: Use both “Hills like White Elephants” and “Good People” to compare/and/or contrast a common message about the decision of a couple having an abortion. Note: I would do two body paragraphs for each story and make it a four-paragraph essay.
Option 2: Use any story we have covered thus far and correlate an idea that reflects some central insight into what you think the story is trying to convey. Use only one story and build the body paragraphs around fictional elements.
Introduction: Brief discussion of the work, including author and title.
Thesis statement (at end of introduction): mentions a central insight of the work, not a factual
or trivial statement – but one which discusses some aspect of the human condition.
Body: Write three paragraphs with topic sentences which indicate the points you plan to discuss. Remember to make your point, explain it, and illustrate it with textual evidence using the paragraph format practiced in class.
Conclusion: Write three or four sentences summarizing or discussing the larger implications of your essay.
Following is a sample outline for an essay on the theme of Thomas Wolfe’s “Child by Tiger.”
Thesis statement: In the story “Child by Tiger,” Wolfe raises questions about the mysterious presence of violence and evil in the human soul.
First supporting point: In the character of Dick Prosser, we see a kind of savagery whose source remains unexplained.
Second supporting point: Violence and evil are also evident in the behavior of the mob.
Third supporting point: The evil in all of us is also embodied in the symbol of the tiger, which appears throughout the story.
Conclusion: In Wolfe’s use of the tiger image as well as the behavior of Dick Prosser and the white mob, the presence of human evil and violence is established. The source of that evil, however, remains unexplained. It is “a mystery and a wonder…a token of the other side of man’s dark soul” (546).
See page ____ for a sample student essay on theme.

Econ 705 Module 3 Assignment
1. Let’s examine the history of LSUS undergraduate enrollment vs. its tuition and fees. Download the “A3Q1 LSUS enrollment data” Excel file; in it you will see historical information on LSUS undergraduate enrollment, total credit hour production, and (12-hour, undergraduate) tuition and fees. (If you wish, you can verify or look up additional information here, here, and here.)
Calculate annual elasticities for both types of quantity variables (i.e., you will have an elasticity of price vs. headcount, and one of price vs. credit hour). You will get an error message in your calculations when the tuition doesn’t change (like in 2006-2007), since the elasticity calculation will be trying to divide by zero; just delete those error values in your Excel table so that the cells are blank. The first headcount elasticity will be calculated based on the 2005 and 2006 values of tuition and headcount and should be about -3.283; the first credit hour elasticity will also be based on the 2005 and 2006 values and should be about -2.855). Calculate the average annual elasticity for headcount (from 2005-2019), and the average annual elasticity for credit hour (from 2005-2019).
Many administrators argue that, to increase revenue to LSUS to cover budget shortfalls, tuition should be raised. Comment on this suggestion, using the evidence you’ve uncovered.
2. Copy and paste the following data into Excel:
P

$205.80

a. Run OLS to determine the demand function as P = f(Q); how much confidence do you have in this estimated equation? Use algebra to invert the demand function to Q = f(P).
b. Using calculus to determine dQ/dP, construct a column which calculates the point-price elasticity for each (P,Q) combination.
c. What is the point price elasticity of demand when P=$210.00? What is the point price elasticity of demand when P=$173.25?
d. To maximize total revenue, what would you recommend if the company was currently charging P=$203.70? If it was charging P=$173.25?
e. Use your first demand function to determine an equation for TR and MR as a function of Q, and create a graph of P and MR on the vertical and Q on the horizontal axis.
f. What is the total-revenue maximizing price and quantity, and how much revenue is earned there? (Round your price to the nearest cent, your quantity to the nearest whole unit, and your TR to the nearest dollar.) Compare that to the TR when P = $210.00 and P = $173.25.
3. Let’s practice time-series forecasting of new home sales. Click here (https://www.census.gov/construction/nrs/historical_data/index.html) to see the newest data in the first table: Houses Sold (Excel file is sold_cust.xls). Look at the monthly data on the “Reg Sold” tab. If you have trouble with the link, I have recreated the data in moodle in the Excel file “A3Q3 Census Housing Data.”
Only keep the dates beginning in January 2006, so delete the earlier observations, and use the data through May 2021. Keep only the US data, both the seasonally unadjusted monthly (column B) and the seasonally adjusted annual (column G). Make a new column of seasonally adjusted monthly by dividing the annual data by 12. Make a column called “t” where t will go from 1 (Jan. 2006) to 185 (May 2021); make a t2 column too (since, if you look at the data, you can see sales are U-shaped; hence the quadratic). Also make a column “D” that is a dummy variable equal to one during the spring and summer months of March through August.
Determine the correlation between the unadjusted and the adjusted monthly data (=CORREL(unadjust., adjust.) in Excel), and produce scatterplots (with straight lines) of both. Do you think making a seasonal adjustment will be useful, given what you observe at this point?
Run four regressions: 1) seasonally unadjusted monthly as the dependent, and t and t2 as the independents, 2) seasonally unadjusted monthly as the dependent, and t, t2, and D as the independents, 3) seasonally adjusted monthly as the dependent, and t and t2 as the independents, and 4) seasonally adjusted monthly as the dependent, and t, t2, and D as the independents. Discuss your findings, and determine which of the four models is the best for forecasting new home sales. When interpreting your p-values, remember that, say, 1.0E-08 is 1.0 * 10^-8, which is 0.00000001. State the equation that would be used to forecast sales.
4. Your company, which specializes in bovine costumery (BullFeathers®), has the following demand function:
Q = a + bP + cM + dR
where Q is the quantity demanded of BullFeathers’ most popular bird costume for cows, P is the price of that product, M is consumer income, and R is the price of a related product. The regression results are:

Discuss whether you think these regression results will generate good sales estimates for BullFeathers.
Now assume that the income is $55,613, the price of the related good is $237, and BullFeathers chooses to set the price of its product at $252.
b. What is the estimated number of units sold given the data above? (round to nearest unit; no decimals)
c. What are the values for the own-price, income, and cross-price elasticities?
d. If P increases by 5%, what would happen (in percentage terms) to quantity demanded?
e. If M increases by 3%, what would happen (in percentage terms) to quantity demanded?
f. If R decreases by 4%, what would happen (in percentage terms) to quantity demanded?

Luxury Brand Strategy/ Project “FRAGRANCE of Gstaad Palace by Diptyque”
Indeed, to be more precise, the luxury company Diptyque wishes, in cooperation with the hotel Gstaad Palace, to create a luxury fun activity (workshop) for the customers of this hotel, based on the idea of ??the possibility for each participating customer, to create their own perfume by customization. Indeed, a representative of the Diptyque company will be in the Gtaad Palace hotel throughout the winter season (Gstaad is a ski resort in Switzerland) in a dedicated space within the hotel; this representative is trained in the chemistry of plants and other ingredients that constitute any perfume. The idea is therefore to make discover the gems of the region of Gstaad (highlighting the local aspect) and by this sensitization (ecological aspect) with the customer, to allow him to make his own perfume (through local plants etc) and therefore to have at the end a finished product (perfume) that represents it, unique (real luxury, it is a real personalized service). He will therefore be able to leave with a true memory of his unforgettable vacation, which he will remember for a long time because he will wear the scent on a daily basis (this sentence can be marketing argument). This workshop is open to both men and women, but also young people. the rates can be incorporated into the final bill of the stay at the hotel with the possibility of creating reduced rates for families, or when it comes to a honeymoon (ideal gift! etc.) “free it’s up to you to find other arguments, how it can be implemented, prices, advertising and marketing…Indeed, now that I have explained the main lines of the project, here is how the presentation should be constructed: 15 slides speakers notes for each slides (i mean the speaker notes under each slide it’s what i need to say to explain it’s content during a presentation; You have 4 distincts parts of the presentation => – PART 1: “INTRODUCTION” => presentation of the DIPTYQUE company (2 slides speaker notes) as well as of the Gstaad Palace hotel (first slide speaker note). Part 2: Type I and Type II Error
In answering the following questions, it will be helpful to have before you the definitions of Type I and Type II errors that you have already learned. Here is a reminder:
Type I: There really is not an effect (population truth), but you find one (your decision) in your study.
Type II: There really is an effect (population truth), but you don’t find one (your decision) in your study.
5. It is a population fact that men and women differ in height. You draw a random sample of men and a random sample of women, measure their heights, and find that the average height of the men and women do not differ. Given that men’s and women’s heights really are different in their respective populations, what type of error occurred in your study—Type I or Type II? Explain your answer.
6. Stan applied to work at Great Company. Because Stan had a degree from a prestigious university, the company expected him to be a great employee. Given their expectation (i.e., given what they thought was the population truth regarding applicants from prestigious universities), managers at Great Company hired Stan. However, Stan turned out to be a very unproductive worker, and Great Company ended up firing him. What type of error did Great Company make in its initial decision to hire Stan—was it Type I or Type II? Explain your answer.
7. In general, students who attend private universities come from higher socioeconomic families than those who attend public universities. A sociologist selects a random sample of students from each type of university and finds that the students from the public university sample have higher socioeconomic backgrounds than those from the private university sample. Given that this result is contrary to actual population fact, what type of error did this study lead to—Type I or Type II? Explain your answer.
8. There is no significant difference between male and female infants in the age at which they first walk. A pediatrician reviews the age of walking for all infants in her practice and is surprised to find a significant difference between males and females in the age at which they first walked. Given that this result is contrary to actual population fact, what type of error did this study lead to—Type I or Type II? Explain your answer.
Part 3: Type I and Type II Errors and their Consequences
For the following situations, develop the appropriate Ho and Ha and state what the consequences would be for Type I and Type II errors.
