Self-directed learning (SDL) in its greatest sense alludes to a person’s capacity to recognize or adapt to their own leaning requirements, decide their leaning objective, abilities to choose their preferred learning method and debrief their outcomes. When using SDLs in nursing, it is being able to learn and improve skills or to provide satisfactory care to the patients. Moreover, due to significant development in medical field, health care professionals needs to be a lifelong learners. Therefore, SDL is important in reinforcing and addressing challenges that nurses are facing in health care settings today (Shirazi et al. 2017). This essay will argue that of the many self-directed learning skills nurses need to have and the following are the most important, growth mindset, time management, taking initiatives and accepting responsibility.

When talking about growth mindset is the ability to realize that an individual can accomplish any difficult circumstances in life which is particularly vital in the medical field. Positive effect of growth mindset is it creates confidence, learning and improving everyday to become better nurse and decreased fear of failure (Williams C. A , 2020). One of the strategies that nurses use to increase growth mindset is reflection. Self-reflection is one of the main skills that can be used, any reflection strategies such as Gibbs reflective cycle can benefit throughout a individual nursing career. Reflection refers to when a person contemplates experiences are the way to improve and how they provide care or the quality of care they offer to the clients. This SDL skill could assist a lots of medical professionals in their nursing career (Tashiro, J., Shimpuku, Y., Naruse, K.,et al, 2013).

Time management is one of the significant self-directed learning skills, especially throughout the nursing career when considering all the activities/workloads when nurses encounter multiple jobs at once can be difficult. Therefore, it causes failing to prioritize activities, which limits good quality care (Nayak., and Shalini G. 2018). Time management supports healthcare professionals to precedence patient centered care/safe and best quality care on time. Effective time management strategies are being used by nurses and some of them are removing distractions and less multitasking. The reason for using these strategies are ineffective completion of activities which can be less effective when multitasking. Therefore, time management and taking responsibility is important, and it would be beneficial if RN (registered nurses)/nurses apply this SLD strategies (“Time management tips for nurses”, 2020).

Accepts responsibility can be related to duty of care. Duty of care means healthcare workers have the legal and moral obligation to protect the clients from any harm while they are in healthcare organisation. Therefore, nurses or any other healthcare professional are accountable for the decisions, actions and the outcomes, both legally and professionally (duty of care,n.d). Accountability in nursing is connected to patient’s treatment outcome and quality of care. It is the necessary in nursing practice because it build patient nurse relationship which creates trust between them, develops strong communication and clear communication, all these created culture accountabilities as well it helps the nurses to learn from each other and understand nursing obligations as stated by Nursing leadership and accountability in nursing. (2020). Duquesne university Therefore, this is one of the essential SDL skill that nurse needs to have.

Taking initiative is being a successful leader such as people that are proactive, think critically and take appropriate actions. In nursing, in a situation that requires immediate action or an emergency situation, nurses should have the knowledge and the ability to think and take action instantly (Brooks. A, 2017). Having this SDL skill would show that the nurse leadership skills which shows that the healthcare worker has ability to create a great effect on the patient’s treatment outcome. Two leadership skills that healthcare professionals have are, critical thinking and communication skills. An example would how a nurse performs in an emergency situation.

in conclusion, SDL has a lot of significance in building and managing the difficulties that the health care professionals are encountering nowadays. The purpose of this research was to validate the use of SDL in nursing. Therefore, those SDLs such as growth mindset, time management, taking initiative and accepting responsibility would be advantageous when they are applied because nursing can be stressful, demanding, has lots of obligations and physical pains (Jung, C., & Oh, H. 2017). “Considering the importance and necessity of SDL and its related activities in nursing students’ lifelong learning, the present study aimed to determine the M.Sc. nursing students’ [ nursing students and healthcare workers] SDL activities” (Shirazi et al. 2017).

Introduction

A series RLC circuit consists of a resistor, R, an inductor, L and a capacitor, C, connected in series. The resonant frequency of the RLC circuit is given by:

The oscillation of the current and voltage in the RLC circuit can be maintained by injecting electrical energy into the circuit using an AC source (power supply). If the system is driven at a frequency that is either above or below the resonant frequency, the current flowing will be less than that corresponding to the resonant frequency, . For this reason, the RLC circuit is very useful as a tuning device. A tuned RLC circuit results in a higher oscillation amplitude for example in the case of a radio signal.

For this lab you will connect an inductor, L and a capacitor, C, in series with the headphones, as shown in Figure 8.1. The headphones will play the role of the resistor, R. We will use the sinusoidal signal from an online tone generator, http://onlinetonegenerator.com/frequency-sweep-generator.html, as the power supply in our series RLC circuit. We will connect this “power supply” into the RLC circuit we will build on the breadboard by connecting the audio jack of the computer onto our breadboard.

That will be the AC source for our circuit. The frequency of the tone will increase within a prescribed range we will set. At resonance, the current through the circuit (and thus through the headphones) is maximum. As a result, we will hear the “loudest” response when the frequency of the AC source hits the resonant value. We will have the iOLab “listen” to the signal by placing the headphone as close as possible to the microphone of the iOLab and we will record the signal. Once we recorded the signal, we will use our iOLab Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) feature to find the component of the signal which had the highest intensity. It is expected that the exact frequency for which the intensity was the highest to coincide with the resonant frequency of the RLC circuit.

4. Perform measurements for all capacitances listed in Table 8.1 and fill in the Table 8.1. For each line of the table, include a screen shot similar to that in Figure 8.3 showing the results you obtained. These will be Figure LR 8.1 through Figure LR 8.6 in your lab report. Note that the signal from the microphone might be different.

5. Calculate the expected resonant frequency using equation (1) for each circuit (all capacitances) and enter the values in Table 8.1. Compare the measured and calculated resonant frequencies and calculate the corresponding % differences using equation (2):
